Chess Clocks
I may be wrong, but I think there is only one place to buy clocks in Windsor:
Hügin and Münin 1664 Tecumseh Road East, Windsor. 519-974-7898
There are on-line "chess shops" here (Toronto)
and here (Ottawa).

August 28 ... CUPE Pro-Am
For this tournament we managed to get some of the stronger players out, which allowed us to have two sections, one pro and the other amateur.
In the pro section we had Istvan Kiraly (2013), Zoltan Kiraly (2240), Vlad DrKulec (2124) and Denton Cockburn (2167). Of the 8 games played in this section, 4 of them were drawn! Istvan Kiraly managed to score 3/4, gaining a whopping 72 points!
Vlad only lost 10, while Denton and Zoltan both lost 26. These are the guys that are the regulars in the Windsor Chess League, which is still going on. They play a game a week, with a 90 minute time control. Let Denton know if you are interested in this sort of event.
In the amateur section, we had Minya Bai, Jeremy and Joshua Mathews, Zhehai Zhang, Jeannie Zhang, and Emily Robinson.
Unfortunately, Emily had to withdraw after playing only 2 games. Minya, Jeremy and Joshua all won 3 of their 4 games. The prizes went to tie-break, with Minya getting the trophy, Jeremy getting silver and Joshua getting bronze.
Check out the CFC ratings for all active Windsor players here.
August 21 ... CFC-rated tournament
Kind-of a non-report, Jeffrey Zhu and Michael O'Neil tied for first, with Minya Bai one point behind. This event was most notable for Jeannie Zhang winning her first-ever CFC-rated game!
August 16-19 - Montreal North American Youth Chess Championship
This was the first time that Canada has served as host for this event, it was part of Math & Chess 25th Anniversary celebrations. There were players from Canada, USA, Mexico, and Haiti playing in the tournament.
- Melissa Lee (U16 Girls) 4.5/7 for 4th place
- Shaumik Baki (U12 Boys) 3.0/7 for 25th place
- Brendon Lee (U18 Boys) 3.0/7 for 7th place
- Joseph Zhou (U16 Boys) 2.5/7 for 18th place
Unfortunately for Joseph the U16 Boys session was very strong with 12 players over 2000 CFC.

August 14 ... CFC-rated tournament
Hanyuan Ye dominated the field, and won with a perfect score of 4/4.
Joseph Zhou continued his run of good form, losing only to Hanyuan and scoring 3/4. He's now breaking the 1500 mark for the first time.
Jeffrey Zhu took third on tie-break with 2 points.
Minya Bai also scored 2/4. She's enjoying the competition from strong players like Hanyuan.
I'd also like to congratulate Jeannie Zhang. She's younger than the others, but she is definitely not afraid of giving them a good game.
~ Denton
Wednesday August 6 - SAC - day 4
Once again, Joseph Zhou won the 1st place with 4/4, and Kabir Bhangoo got the second place.
Sunand Kannappan won the 1st place under 1200 and Prushoth Vivekanantha won the 1st place under 1000 for the 4th consecutive day. Kiran Menon won the 1st prize in solving puzzles and
Dhairya Patel won the 2nd prize and the prize for the most enthusiastic participant.
Thursday August 5 - SAC - day 3
Joseph Zhou scored 100% to win the 1st place and Shaumik Baki got the second place. Prushoth Vivekanatha won the 1st place under 1200.
Wednesday August 4 - SAC - day 2
Joshua Myers won again, this time with 4½ out of 5, while Joseph Zhou took second. Kabir Bhangoo won 1st place under 1200 and Prushoth Vivekanantha won the 1st place under 1000.
Tuesday August 3 - SAC - day 1
Joshua Myers and Joseph Zhou tied for the 1st place with 3.5/4.0 and Joshua won the playoff. Brian Bashura and Prushoth Vivekanatha tied for U1200 1st place and Brian won the playoff.
July 30 - August 2
Three Windsor players made the trip to Kitchener for the chess festival. David Deforest and Shaumik Baki played in the Canadian Amateur under-1400 section. David started well, but a loss near the end dropped him to 4th place, with 4.5/7. Shaumik was not as lucky, or whatever, he finished with 3/7.
Vladimir Drkulec played in the Ontario Closed, he was almost the lowest-rated in this over-2100 event. Vlad scored two wins, two draws, and two losses, to finish in the middle of the pack, gaining a bunch of rating points. Vlad has gained (or regained) over 100 rating points in the last month, looks like all those Friday lessons are paying off!
July 31 ... CFC-rated tournament
This was was Hanyuan Ye's day. He won with a perfect score of 4/4.
Michael O'Neil and Jeffrey Zhu tied for 2nd-3rd, with 2nd going to Jeffrey on tiebreak.
This is Michael's third straight tournament with a prize. He's got 1 silver and 2 bronze. Let's see how long before he picks up his first gold.
A note of excitement, last week 6 of the 10 players that played achieved a new record highest rating. Congrats to the Windsor kids for showing such marked improvement.

July 24 ... CFC-rated tournament
Denton writes: We had a good turn-out again, 10 players this time.
Joshua Myers won with a perfect 4/4; second was Jeremy Mathews with 3/4.
Michael O'Neil and Jeffrey Zhu both scored 2.5/4, but Michael got the bronze on tiebreak
This should result in Joshua breaking the 1600 mark for the first time!
Next tournament July 31.
July 17 ... CFC-rated tournament
This event was organised by Denton Cockburn, with the assistance of his union, CUPE local 4580. There were 14 players.
Brendon Lee won with 3.5/4.
Michael O'Neil and Terry Coulombe tied for second with 3/4 (Michael gained about 70 points in the event, and Terry also gained some rating points.)
July 6 - 9 ... Canadian Youth Chess Championship
This was the most complex event I've organised. Everything went very well, and now I'm in my post-event slump.

ummm... what day is it??
I'm so scatter-brained these days I haven't written up any tournament reports for the last two events... hmmm... I don't know when I can get to it.
Anway, there are three events being organised by Fazle Baki, while I am trying to remember where I keep my Alzheimers medication...
5 June... CFC-rated tournament
There was a very nice small tournament at the South Asian Centre on Tecumseh Road. Organised and directed by Fazle Baki, there was space for only 12 players. As it turned out, they squeezed in 14 players (the 7th board placed in the manager's office) and also someone was turned away at the door.
Winner of the A section was Denton Cockburn, who defeated Vlad Drkulec in the last round, for the second tournament in a row. Of the juniors in the section, Shaumik Baki claimed the trophy with 2 points and with an upset victory against Joshua Myers. David Deforest and Hanyuan Ye tied for the 2nd place with 1.5 points each.
Rohan Talukdar won every game to take home the trophy in the B section. Prushoth Vivekanantha and Robbie Haggith tied for the 2nd place with 2 points each.
22 May... Ontario Girls Championship
Congratulations to Rachel Tao, second in her section, and Ellen Tao, third in her section, at the Ontario girls Championship. Here they are being congratulated by Yuanling Yuan, the youngest Canadian Woman International master.
29 May... CFC-rated tournaments
Once again, almost a full house... there were a couple of no-shows, but the room was pretty full.
There were 8 players in the Pro-section, playing for cash prizes. Jeremy Mathews, buoyed by his success last month, played with the big guys, who showed no mercy. As usual in CFC-rated events, the rating system was shown to be accurate, as top-rated Denton Cockburn won all three games. Tied for second were Vlad Drkulec, Alan Baljeu, and Oleg Korenevski, visiting from Australia.
In the Amateur section, playing for trophies, Joseph Zhou and Rachel Tao each won all their games. Hanyuan Ye and Shaumik Baki tied in the last round, and also in the final standings, with 2½/3.

16 May... Ontario Youth Championship
Windsor players at OYCC
Brief report... congratulations to Zhehai Zhang, tying for first in the under-8 boys (2nd on tiebreak). Grade 1 student Rohan Talukdar tied for 4th. In the under-12 girls, Rachel Tao placed 4th, with Erica Forshaw one place behind. In the under-14 boys, Joshua Myers was unlucky to place "only" tied for second, though 6th on tiebreak.
All results here.
24 April... CFC-rated tournaments
We had a full house, 26 players in the amateur section, and 6 in the pro section. Amateurs play for trophies, the pro section had cash prizes.
The pro section started off with upsets, as Mike Katrib beat top-rated Vlad Drkulec in a complex middlegame. Also, unrated Jesse Goron outlasted Rob Kubik in what probably should have been a drawn endgame. After the first round, the rating system re-asserted itself, and there were no more upsets. Mike came first, and Jesse and Vlad tied for 2nd.
The only player to win all three games was Jeremy Matthews, taking clear first in the amateur section. Erica Forshaw, Joshua Mathews, Hanyuan Ye, and Andrew Papadopoulos tied for 2nd.
There is a strong correlation between skill level and the amount of time used, which is why the adults were all taking all their time, and some of the kids' games were over in a few minutes. I would like to offer to the stronger players my sincere appreciation for their patience and good humour.
A big thanks to Linda Deforest for volunteering, and to Kelly Prsa who I strong-armed into being the snacks lady. Debi Croucher brought me a coffee, and took over the snacks late in the day.
Complete results here The ratings are published every Wednesday, usually late afternoon, you can look yourself up at www.chess.ca
18 April... Ontario Chess Challenge

Brendon Lee, 3 points, 4th
Melissa Lee, 3 points, 6th

April 9th...Colasanti-Optimist tournament
This is my favourite tournament... apart from having to get up before the crack of dawn to deliver the chess equipment. I show up early, make the welcome speech, and then just mooch about, while Linda Lauzon and the Kingsville Optimists do all the week. Everyone gets a trophy or a medal, and there are a gazillion door prizes, and everyone goes home happy. Especially me.
April 3rd...playoff report
The playoffs today went very well, and I even had time to play some chess in the afternoon. Many thanks to volunteers Dan Passador, Robert Ty, Joseph Zhou, Linda Deforest, Herb Alice, Denton Cockburn, and the Lee Family chess organising group, dad Frank and chips-off-the-old-block Brendon and Melissa.
The trophies arrived only a few hours before the event, and never even made it into my house. They went straight from delivery truck to my van, and were unpacked at the site by Angela Passador.
Congratulations to all the trophy winners, listed at the Chess Challenge website.
Now it's on to the
Canadian Youth Championship on July 6-9.
March 10th
Michigan Junior Championship
The players who went to the Michigan Junior Championship 2010 did very well. We have to start with Jeremy Mathews scoring a perfect 5 for 5 and claiming the Co-Championship for the Michigan Children's Reserve Section (K-5). Brother Joshua Mathews went 3 for 5 winning 2nd place for Grade 2.
Rachel Tao also scored 3 out of 5 winning a 2nd place plaque for Grade 5. Shaumik Baki playing in K-8 section did very well with 3.5 out 5 for 3rd place for Grade 6. Unfortunately Ellen Tao (3.5/5) and Melissa Lee (2/5) had disastrous last games to keep them out of the hardware. Report from Frank Lee.
Tournament results, February 6th
We played in four sections...
The very strong A section, average rating 1266, was won by top-rated Joshua Myers, who scored 2½/3, and managed to pick up a dozen rating points. Stephen Passador was second.
The B section was very evenly balanced, with Rachel Tao coming on top of the heap.
The C section was won by Jeffrey Zhu, playing in his first rated tournament. Jeffrey arrived late and breezed thru the field, giving up only a draw to second-place Kabir Bjangoo. Tied for 3rd place were Minya Bai, Joshua Mathews and Sunand Kannappan.
The D section was won by Syed Moeed, the only player in the tournament to score 100%. Alex Mikho was second, and and Zahraa Moeed tied for third.
Next junior tournament Saturday February 20th.
